New Op-Ed: ‘Universities must lend their weight to combating AI disinformation.’ Co-authored with Nick Jennings, in the Times Higher
/I wrote an op-ed with Loughborough University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Jennings, for the Times Higher.
Our motivation: the need to dial down the all-too-familiar "hype cycle" with AI and disinformation. This means getting beyond the fatalism and sense of powerlessness hype cycles promote—and focusing on the tech’s real and lasting effects. With any tech, these are often substantial but subtle, complex and more gradually felt than forecast by early optimists and pessimists.
Universities across the world are in a strong position to help regulators and public communicators of all kinds respond quickly and effectively to the threat of online disinformation in time for the next big year of elections. Agile, well-informed regulation is achievable.
